How Can Krill Oil Increase My Sensitivity to Cannabis?

Why is my Dispensary Selling Krill Oil?

Adding Krill Oil/Omega 3 Fatty Acids to your diet may help increase your sensitivity to cannabis and thereby help reduce the overall cost of your medication.

We wrote a blog on the Endocannabinoid System recently (ECS Blog) – which explained the system of chemical messengers and receptors that is responsible for many of the  effects patients experience when they use cannabis.  What we didn’t mention in that blog is that the chemical messengers are actually made from the fatty lipid membrane that surrounds neurons.  Further, the receptors that the chemical messengers interact with are embedded in these membranes, so it is a good idea to have a healthy lipid membrane for this system to work.  We just need to provide the building blocks that our body can use to maintain healthy fatty membranes.

In addition, the phyto (plant-based) cannabinoids are lipid chemicals themselves and are fat-soluble.

Attached in the link are several reasons as to why it is important to have a healthy diet that includes beneficial fats. [1]

What is Krill Oil?

  • Krill Oil is a supplement made from Krill, a small type of crustacean often consumed by Whales and other sea creatures.
  • Like fish oil, Krill Oil is a source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), types of omega-3 fats found only in marine sources.Omega-3 fats have important functions in the body and are linked to a variety of health benefits.

How might I benefit from adding Krill Oil to my daily regimen?

  • Krill Oil is an excellent source of healthy fats: these omega 3 fatty acids are most often found in seafood.  It is suggested for humans to consume around 8 ounces of fish per week to properly balance the fatty acids in their diet.  If you do not like fish, Krill Oil is a great way to get these essential fats.
  • Krill Oil may help fight inflammation: Omega 3’s have been shown to have important anti-inflammatory functions, such as reducing arthritis symptoms and inflammatory joint pain.  In fact, studies have found that Krill Oil can significantly reduced a marker of inflammation and also found that Krill Oil may reduce stiffness, functional impairment and pain in patients with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis.[2]
  • Krill Oil may improve blood lipids and heart health: Omega-3 fats, and DHA and EPA specifically, are considered heart-healthy. Research has shown that fish oil may improve blood lipid levels, and Krill Oil appears to be effective as well. Studies have shown it may be particularly effective at lowering levels of triglycerides and other blood fats.
  • It’s very easy to add Krill Oil to your daily routine:  Taking Krill Oil is a simple way to increase your EPA and DHA intake.  Krill Oil is widely available and can be purchased online or at most pharmacies.  The capsules are typically smaller than those of fish oil supplements and may be less likely to cause belching or a fishy aftertaste.  Krill Oil is also typically considered to be a more sustainable choice than fish oil, because krill are so abundant and reproduce quickly. Unlike fish oil, it also contains astaxanthin.

What is the relationship between Krill Oil (Omega Fatty Acids) and cannabis?

In addition to all the other health benefits mentioned, Krill Oil/Omega Fatty Acids are an important foundation to a healthy endocannabinoid system (ECS).  Without a well balanced ECS, the body may not have the building blocks to make endocannabinoids and may not have a healthy-enough cell membrane to support cannabis receptors.

These fatty acids also allow the body to absorb and process fat-soluble plant cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. In fact, previous research has shown how important fats are for getting the most of your cannabis. [3]
